| Histoire administrative: | Shortly after the Second World War and at the beginning of the Cold War, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the Brussels Treaty on 17th March 1948. This treaty aimed at establishing a cooperation between the member states in the fields of armaments, defense and security as well as in economic, social and cultural matters.
After the failure of the European Defense community in 1954, the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy were admitted to the Brussels Treaty. This admission gave birth to the Western European Union (WEU).
WEU was closed on 30th June 2011. The Council agreed officially in its decision C(11) 05 FINAL in May 2011 to transfer the archives to the National Archives in Luxembourg and expressed its hope that the documents would be analyzed scientifically, a mission that was committed to the "Centre virtuel sur la connaissance sur l'Europe".
After some preliminary visits of the archives preserved both in Paris and in Brussels in 2010 and 2011, the transfers to Luxembourg were completed in 2011. |
